Days Six and Seven

February 18

Today I have thrown myself into food. Not only eating it (I know, I know), but planning it. I am trying to figure out how to proceed from my juice cleanse to clean eating. Seems easy. No more pizza rolls, microwave meals, or Chinese take-out. Okay, I got that. But then I really start thinking about it. I’ll need to be extremely organized in my meal planning in order to not break the bank buying food for meals and juice.

I’ve never been particularly good at organizing my life in a way that is practical so this will be a major exercise in self-discipline. Really, this whole cleanse/detox/whatever is really pushing my willpower. And it’s shown me that I allow myself to concede to defeat more often than I feel comfortable with.

Just today, I allowed myself to “break” my cleanse. Sort of. I mean, I juiced today but my sister Maggee and I had a date. We went to a restaurant called Ramsi’s Cafe On the World. It’s an extraordinary eat here in Louisville, KY. So even though I juiced, I indulged in food today as well. I had meat today which is the main problem. I ordered dates stuffed with goat cheese and tuna seared rare with sweet potatoes and cooked greens. I can’t say I regret my choice to eat today when I enjoyed such an amazing meal. Until today, I had never had dates or tuna. So I consider this a win.

But in all seriousness, going out to eat was my allowance. It’s back to intense juicing on Sunday. The cleanse is starting to show side effects. My skin is breaking out now from my face to my chest and shoulders and my whole body is starting to ache in an unfamiliar way. I read that both of these things are normal for people who juice so I’m not worried. It just kinda sucks.

I’m also just exhausted. This is day five now that I have received less than four hours of sleep at night. I’ve been too manic to be able to get a healthy amount. Something has to give eventually or I’ll lose my mind from sleep deprivation alone.

I watched Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead today. It was interesting. It’s about Joe Cross, and Australian who suffers from a autoimmune disease and is over weight. This film chronicles Joe’s last chance effort to save himself from misery and an early death by turning to the body’s natural ability to heal itself. To allow his body this chance, he turns to an intense 60 day juice only cleanse and travels across America trying to inspire others to eat healthy.

He inspired many people including me. Watching him and some of the people he helped go from sick and unhealthy to being bright, vibrant, and active gave me hope that maybe, just maybe, it can work for me too. And honestly, what do I have to lose at this point? I’ll try anything and right now, this diet thing is that anything.

February 19

I woke up today feeling wonderful. Well and truly wonderful. My chest cold/whatever is starting to go away. My chest isn’t as tight as it was yesterday and my coughing has quieted almost completely. The fact that I got over eight hours of sleep last night might be a contributing factor to my getting better.

I drank my juice today like a good person and decided what meals I am going to cook first. I’ll try and write about how my cooking experiences go as they take place. Mostly, the meals I chose are meatless but a few do involve chicken. I’m excited. Cooking is something I hate doing until I actually start. Then I enjoy it. I am a very slow cook though. It takes me half of forever to get a meal prepped and going. Hopefully this is something that can be chalked up to my lack of overall kitchen experience and will improve with time.

I decided on five dinner meals total: Creamy Coconut Lentil Curry, Lentil and Spinach Soup, Baked Eggplant, Chicken Quinoa Soup, and Apricot-Glazed Cornish Hens with Wild Rice. I’m not saying these are exactly the things I am going to end up making, I might change my mind later on, but for now this is what I’ve chosen.

I actually spent part of the day researching lentils because I’ve never worked with them before or really even eaten them. They are apparently incredibly healthy and filling. A mixture between a grain, a nut, and a bean, lentils contain fiber, protein, and a number of vitamins and minerals. Mom was generous enough to let me have free reign over the lentils she already owns which are brown or possibly green lentils. If anyone knows for sure please comment.


I’m excited. For the first time in a long time, I feel completely in control of my life and it’s like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. If nothing else comes from all of this, at least I’ll be able to say that this was something I decided for myself. I hope this feeling is something that continues on even once I finish my juice cleanse.

    You’re doing awesome. Yup you’re coming out of detox and feeling better. I said days 3 to 5 suck. I’ll get you the shopping list tomorrow..Keep up the great work.
